Sapphires were first discovered in 1965 near the Umba Valley. The unique Umba sapphires are known worldwide for their stunning color. Since then further deposits were found in the 1990s in the Songea region in alluvial deposits along the tributaries of the Ruvuma River. Sapphire is a gemstone associated with royalty.
